Exploring maps helps us understand our histories; our social, economic and political stories; where we came from; and where we are in relationship with each other.
At the centre of the Mapping Exercise is a large map of Canada (called Turtle Island by some First Nations). We’ll learn about the First Peoples and the waves of settlers in recent centuries, explore why early European explorers called Canada an empty land (“terra nullius”) and consider what that means today. We’ll watch excerpts from the Anglican Church of Canada’s “Doctrine of Discovery” and hear Indigenous voices. Please come to share, learn, be challenged and be engaged.
The Mapping Exercise was developed by Alongside Hope in answer to the Calls to Action of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Michael Shapcott, Executive Director of Sorrento Retreat Centre in British Columbia, is a trained facilitator and will lead the exercise.
