Repertoire:
- Magnificat (Arvo Pärt)
- Nunc Dimittis (Paul Mealor)
- Lo, the full, final Sacrifice (Gerald Finzi)
- Preces & Responses (Kerensa Briggs)
- Psalm 46 (Graeme Langager)
Not to be missed, this Evensong features a luminous, mystical, and stirring selection of choral music, including Pärt’s well-known and stunning Magnificat.
The Nunc Dimittis by Paul Mealor – who’s music has been featured at Royal weddings and coronations – was written for Selwyn College, Cambridge (where Canadian Sarah Macdonald serves as Organist and Choir Director). It is a true celebration of sound.
The Preces & Responses are terrific and fresh, written by an emerging female composer from England, Kerensa Briggs.
The anthem, Lo, the full, final sacrifice by Gerald Finzi is the cornerstone of the musical selections. With sonorities reminiscent of Vaughan Williams and Howells – and featuring UBC’s Isaac Howie on St. John’s powerful organ – Finzi’s setting is a true masterwork. The poetry (Richard Crashaw, 1613-1649) of this anthem is absolutely breath-taking, and teeming with rich metaphysical imagery.
